My Life as an Interior Designer…the journey so far!

My profession can be summed up in one Big-A word…ADVENTURE!!!

The most fulfilling part of my life is that i love what i do. InteriorDesign for me is totally full of witty inventions enhanced with creativity and innovativeness.

Let’s take a typical Monday morning. Despite the obvious need to dot the I’s and cross the T’s from the previous night, I eventually hit my bed at 1:00am (speaking realistically).

By 5:00am, my alarm goes off, blaring in my subconscious, I talk in my head… “Babygirl, you gotta keep moving”. In a minute I’m up. I pace my bedroom twice, and somedays 4 times to clear my eyes of extra sleep and get used to the freshness of the new day. I decide my best pathway for the day – via God. I never joke with His presence. In Him I live, move, and have my being. I ensure I read the Proverb Chapter for that day (thank God I have sufficient to last the 30 days of the month) and next, I say my prayers, commit my ways unto God, leaning on His strength, guidance, favor and success of the day.

Then, the actual adventure begins!

Its 7:00am. All that happens afterwards is in the twinkle of the eye. I’m dressed up and ready to get moving.

7:45am. Yes, I used 45mins…to dress up A.N.D…

I make the first call to confirm an appointment with the electrician on site, he will be there together with his crew. I’m shuffling between breakfast and recalling the color code for the orange paint I chose on a recent project. Phone in hand, I call the painter. He can’t make it till tomorrow morning. I go “Oh no” and then resolve to “Oh well”, the electrician will break the walls anyway…so tomorrow will do just fine. I remind the painter of the scheduled meet for the next day and quickly cut the call.

On to the next. I need to check my mails, a quick surf through my inbox, I read the relevant ones. I have the design and quote for the wall signage of my client’s company logo. Fabulous…

Phone rings…its 7:45am. A reminder of an appointment with a client, its a consultation for the interior/exterior painting of their residence. Awesome. I’ll be there…and… I’m ready to hit the road!

8:00am. Out on the streets, I call a cab and I’m off shopping.

Paint (I didn’t recall the last color code, decided to opt for a close shade), curtains, light fittings, tiles, chairs, wall frames…all the while I’m thinking “there’s something I need to get done asap”.

Yes, I remember…call my client for a transfer of funds…I’m laughing out loud. I send a text message instead. Faithful and prompt, I receive a bank alert. Transfer completed. Goodness, I love my job…

A quick glance at my calendar, a birthday notification. I’ll call later, as i am already close to the market stalls. However, I compose a birthday text, I scroll up to proof-read, satisfied with the wishes and humor, I hit the “send” button.

FOCUS—its shopping time.

2:00pm. I drop my shopping cart on site, the electricians are rounding off…there’s a wire dangling loosely, fix it I say and turn away like it was never mentioned. The entire job looks neat. Thumbs up, I pay him his balance. Goodbye, till the next phone call. God bless the reliable ones.

2:15pm. My consult begins. Summary? Its another trip to the paint shop, alas, that will be tomorrow. In the next 30 minutes, a friend wants me to help choose from samples of fabrics for her beddings. 2:45pm. I ask her if she has a particular color theme in mind, she says no. What is the color on your bedroom wall I ask, she says blue. Fine, let’s work with pink, blue, white…I point at that and this fabric and the decision making is over.

5:00pm. Goodness Gracious, I need to take a bite (mi o le wa ku – in my native tongue). A chill bottle of CocaCola and Maryland cookies (sigh), what a diet! Phew

Still alert and in-between munches, I have to ensure the aluminum guy delivers tomorrow(he is the most difficult of all), but he gave his word. I put a call through, “Oh sure he says”. I tell myself, double-check before the day ends.

I need to get online. 5:30pm, I connect to the internet. I’m surfing, browsing and googling stuffs – Interior Design News & Trends

6:00pm. My day ends. My work continues…Dotting the I’s and crossing the T’s for the day ahead.

All the while, muttering under my breath…I am the Best at what I do!!!
