It is widely agreed that Africa is the new land for development and opportunities. Nigeria, as one of the key areas of forecasted growth has begun to attract internationally acclaimed Architects and Interior Designers making their stamp on the emerging landscape. The importance of Interior Design is apparent in our daily lives. However, it is disappointing that the World Design Directory has no listing of any Interior design & decorating school, Colleges or Universities in Nigeria – 5th June 2012. Perhaps a reason for this, is the poor level of awareness of the profession.
Titi Ogufere – Essential Interiors 2009 said, the terms ‘Interior Designer’ and ‘Interior Decorator’ are often used interchangeably in Nigeria, as if they were identical professions. Whilst both may have the ability and talent to create aesthetics, as well as roles that often overlap—the two are not synonymous. No wonder so many people are confused. Interior design is an art or practice of planning and supervising the design and execution of architectural interiors and their furnishings. Interior decoration, although a key element in interiors, is not solely concerned with human interaction or human behaviour.
In most developed countries, an Interior Designer provides expertise and knowledge. The designer is not only responsible for organizing a space to suit its function, but also makes sure the designs promote value, and comply with building codes and regulations. In providing aesthetic and productive solutions for design needs, Interior Designers consider the use of the space(s), traffic flow, ease of use, proper lighting, durable finishes, colour coordination and other considerations required for the project. An Interior Designer works to represent the best interest of the client and saves countless headaches, delays and ultimately money. They consider the client’s needs, lifestyle, preferences, tastes, time-frame and budget when planning projects. In Nigeria, several people associate the term ‘Interior Design’ wrongly to what they do; be it a furniture maker, fabric supplier, garden designer, landscapist and so on.
The Interior Design Association of Nigeria (IDAN) is established to address the major problems that exist in the Interior Design industry in Nigeria, principally the absence of any:
– voluntary association to stimulate and promote professionalism in the practice legal regime
– statute or regulation governing the Interior Design industry
– institution offering comprehensive professional training in Interior Design.
This is fueled by the realization that Design education can only make meaningful contributions to sustainable National development when adequate attention is given to art, Design and technology at primary and secondary levels. Furthermore, Design education at the Tertiary level must be properly funded with appropriate infrastructures. It is anticipated that these activities will help promote a more positive perception of Design in the country. Many Nigerians who wish to learn and acquire skills can ultimately build a career in Interior Design, capable of understanding and solving complex problems in the field with an awareness of the social, cultural, physical, technical and economic activities of the Nigerian society.
